There were 548,078 teachers in the UK in 2019\/20<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(DfE, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Statista<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gov.uk<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> )<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> number of teachers in the UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2018\/19 was <\/span><b>506,400<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, looking at those employed full-time, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and it went up to <\/span><b>548,078<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Out of those, <\/span><b>216,500<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> teachers worked in primary schools and <\/span><b>208,300 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in secondary schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Independent schools employed <\/span><b>61,500<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> teachers, and <\/span><b>16,700<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> teachers were the employees of special schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Now:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We saw a decrease of <\/span><b>1344<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> for full-time teachers from <\/span><b>2016\/17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a drop of <\/span><b>0.3%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. This trend has been happening in the primary, nursery, and secondary schools, while non-maintained and special schools are witnessing a rise in full-time teachers,<\/span><b> 2%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>1.6%,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> respectively.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The rise to 548,078 in 2020 reflects the increased need for teachers in special schools as numbers in other categories remained mainly the same as in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>10. There is 40% more female than male teachers in UK schools.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(DfE)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The historical gender gap in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">education in the UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> is still very much evident, as g<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ender and education statistics for the UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> tell us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here\u2019s the thing:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Only <\/span><b>30.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of all teachers are male, while the remaining <\/span><b>69.5%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are female. The numbers are even higher looking at the primary school level, where this number is a staggering <\/span><b>82.4%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in favour of the female teachers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>11. The student-teacher ratio in the UK is around 16:4.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(DfE, Besa, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gov.UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The student-teacher ratio in 2020 in maintained schools is 13.6 in Scotland, 18.2 in England, 19.3 in Wales and 18.3 in Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Reported to be one of the highest in Europe, the student-teacher ratio in the United Kingdom rose from <\/span><b>16:2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><b>2016\/17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>16:4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in 2018\/2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alarmingly, a rise to <\/span><b>20:6<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in the ratio in <\/span><b>2017\/18<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> from <\/span><b>20:3<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in <\/span><b>2016\/17<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> was seen in primary schools, while secondary schools went from <\/span><b>15:3<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>15:6 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">during that same year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In England, the recorded ratio went slightly up from <\/span><b>16:2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>16:4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which is the same as the national average. The corresponding figures in Northern Ireland went from <\/span><b>17:8 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><b>17:9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in and dropped in Scotland from <\/span><b>14:0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to <\/span><b>13:9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The student-teacher ratio in Wales stayed the same, <\/span><b>18:4<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">average secondary school size in the UK <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">stood at <\/span><b>948<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> students in <\/span><b>2018<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Primary schools had <\/span><b>281<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> students on average, while special schools had <\/span><b>114<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>12. Out of those, <\/span><b>117<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are located in England, <\/span><b>15<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Scotland, <\/span><b>8<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> in Wales, and <\/span><b>2 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Northern Ireland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The number of further education colleges is <\/span><b>381<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with <\/span><b>94 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of them being sixth-form colleges. Business and administrative studies are the most popular in HE, with 293,000 full-time students in 2018.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(DfE, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gov.UK<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There was a total of 2,566,742 students in higher education in 2020, a decrease of 0.6% compared to 2017\/18.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When it comes to what students choose as the most popular subject in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/markinstyle.co.uk\/higher-education-statistics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">higher education<\/a>,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Business &amp; Administrative Studies were way ahead with <\/span><b>293,000<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> full-time students back in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DFE publications<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> tell us a rise in entries to science subjects had been recorded in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Scotland has seen a change in language entries, with more students picking up Gaelic classes, while French and German entries reported a decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At the same time, Wales and Northern Ireland have reported a decrease in French and Spanish classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">England marks the highest rise in computing classes, and Northern Ireland reports that subject to have the second-highest rise in A levels, even if the overall IT classes are seeing a decline on average in the UK.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><strong>16.
